Dead Embryonic Cells

“The president supports and encourages stem cell research, including using embryonic lines, as long as it does not involve creating, harming or destroying embryos,” Fratto said. “That is an ethical line that should not be crossed.” (Source)

This statement is contradictory in itself and means that he does NOT support embryonic stem cell research, b/c if they are not to be created or destroyed, what is it that scientists are allowed to do?

For clarification:

“during an embryo’s first few days of existence it is a blastocyst - a mass of cells that has not differentiated, and could not develop into a human being unless implanted in a mother’s womb.” (Source)

This asshole is protecting CELLS?! Yet, as governor of Texas, he was able to rationalize over 150 executions on a legal technicality. He claimed that as governor, all he could do was grant them 30 days reprieve. (Source)

It gets me riled b/c this should be a non-issue, the funding for research that a majority of Americans seem to want. Meanwhile, $2.15 billion in federal grants for religious initiatives are perfectly acceptable to this little man. WTF?!

Men Falling Behind

Gender Gaps in High School Graduates (2003-2004):
Male: 66%
Female: 74%
(Source)

Also:
Men in their 30’s are not doing as well as their fathers at the same age, even with their wives’ paychecks added in. (Source)

WTF happened? I would LOVE to read some more studies on this, as I am convinced that this is generational, age-specific, these unmotivated men.

Inner Workings of Soldiers

The border between coercion and torture: the after-effects on interrogators

“I never saw a ghost in Abu Ghraib,” he said. “But I saw a ghost last night. It was me.”

They’re not all drones (free signup required) letters tell soldier’s story posthumously

He had just earned a master’s degree at Texas A&M University in Shakespearean literature, but he was too restless for academia.

“September 11th had a profound effect on him. He didn’t want to be there in 20 years talking about the war,” Jennifer said. “He wanted to be making changes in the world, instead of complaining about them.”

I find these particularly fascinating, just no time to elaborate. Well worth the read.

Make no mistake, I still think their president sucks, I didn’t select him either time. However, I feel for the soldiers’ plight.

Jackass Protest

I can understand protesting fox hunting, but to partake in eating the same breed of dog that the Queen fancies?

Yes, it garners media-attention to the issue, but you are fighting savagery with savagery. You are as barbaric as they are.

I understand the creature was previously deceased, but we don’t eat dog in civilized culture!

Yoko Ono took a bite too. Bunch’a savages in this town.

Levitating & Spinning

Carter offered his harshest assessment for the White House’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, which helped religious charities receive $2.15 billion in federal grants in fiscal year 2005 alone.

“The policy from the White House has been to allocate funds to religious institutions, even those that channel those funds exclusively to their own particular group of believers in a particular religion. Those things in my opinion are quite disturbing,” Carter said. “As a traditional Baptist, I’ve always believed in separation of church and state and honored that premise when I was president, and so have all other presidents, I might say, except this one.”

The Bush administration’s response? To call Carter irrelevant. (Source)

This statement, from the jackass-in-chief’s ranch, is what’s irrelevant. How about an explanation, some answers, instead of a deflection?

I hardly think Carter’s irrelevant, when he is nobly combatting malaria and river blindness in Ethiopia. He’s contributing to the planet more than he destroys, which can’t be said for everyone. (Source)
